Friday Favorite: Creote & Savant

Whether it is intended or not, comic books are often a socio-political commentary. The art and stories are a reflection of culture and current events. While much ado has been made about the treatment and portrayal of female characters in comics, there is much to be said about LGBT characters or rather, the lack thereof.

More recently, mainstream comic books have seen plenty of lesbian love, and perhaps that provides extended shower time for the “target demographic.” But, we all know that people who read comics are a much more diverse and intellectual bunch than the stereotype of your middle-aged, straight white guy.

Based on the human population at large, there is a disproportionately low number of gay characters in comics, particularly gay male characters. Continue reading

Friday Favorite: Guy Gardner

He’s saucy to the tenth power in a gritty-I’ll-kick-your-ass kind of way. Despite his tough exterior and hot temper, he’s got a heart of gold. He’s the guy you want as your best friend. I’d say Kyle Rayner is one lucky mofo.

Guy Gardner is what the kids call a good time. I imagine him with a ring in one hand and a drink in another. His brash personality and general trash talking makes me wanna toss back a few with him at some random space bar. Continue reading

Friday Favorite: Agent 355

There are plenty of reasons to be evangelical about Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man — a haunting storyline in which almost every male on Earth drops dead, pages of nail-biting drama, sharp humor … and a monkey. It’s like a groundbreaking HBO show in print, with great illustrations (Pia Guerra). But of all the reasons I love this story, it’s the character of secret Agent 355 who tops the list. (Spoilers are ahead.) Continue reading

Friday Favorite: Alice

Some of the best characters are villains, and one of my favorite villains is Alice. That is, Kate Kane’s thought-to-be-dead twin sister Elizabeth, who was actually kidnapped in childhood and tortured by terrorists, eventually becoming the Religion of Crime’s High Madame.

Her alternate personality is a beautifully twisted version of Alice Pleasance Liddell of Wonderland fame. Continue reading

Friday Favorite: Tim Drake Wayne

Despite the fact that they all run around in silly costumes, some caped characters get more respect than others. If you say you’re a Batman fan, even his harshest geek critics won’t make fun of you, at least to your face. But saying that Robin is one of your favorites leads to snickering and the occasional joke about inappropriate pixie boot fetishes.

Um, ew. And whatever. Tim Drake Wayne  —Robin III and the current Red Robin — is my ace, and I’m totally OK with that. Continue reading

Friday Favorite: Ragdoll

It is no secret that the ladies of G3 love Secret Six. A key ingredient to the Six’s magic is the loopy and lovable Ragdoll. While charming as ever, make no mistake; he has no scruples making him particularly dangerous in a fight. His lunatic perception of reality fuel his absurd one-liners, and make for festive (and hilarious) pre-mortem conversation. Besides, I can’t help but love the guy who appreciates the fabulousness of Wonder Woman’s boots! Continue reading
