When an artist can do a Golden Age parody/tribute cover so well that it makes you do a double-take, s/he is pretty damned talented. Charles Holbert Jr. is a gifted illustrator who can do that and a whole lot more. I’m crushing on his gallery right now.
His Golden Age Hawt Girl cover, above, tips a hat to yesteryear with a modern flourish. Eye-popping and fun, this piece gets an A-plus for the details, like the faded edges and pen scrawl.
I’ve never seen an interpretation of Hellboy as a woman, but I sure do like it.
Josie and the Pussycats as head-banging, stage-searing hellions? Yes, please.
This Teen Titans cover-like illustration is tremendous. Note how Raven’s cape dissolves into ink and surrounds her teammates. Now that’s what I call having someone’s back.
Finally, I really dug this close-up of Atom Eve. She may be wearing pink, but the glowing fingertips and the don’t-try-nothing-stupid facial expression are a far cry from frilly. Sugar and spice but not that nice. Rock on, Mr. Holbert.
