Squee! of the Week: Charles Holbert Jr.’s Gallery

When an artist can do a Golden Age parody/tribute cover so well that it makes you do a double-take, s/he is pretty damned talented. Charles Holbert Jr. is a gifted illustrator who can do that and a whole lot more. I’m crushing on his gallery right now.

His Golden Age Hawt Girl cover, above, tips a hat to yesteryear with a modern flourish. Eye-popping and fun, this piece gets an A-plus for the details, like the faded edges and pen scrawl.

I’ve never seen an interpretation of Hellboy as a woman, but I sure do like it.

Josie and the Pussycats as head-banging, stage-searing hellions? Yes, please.

This Teen Titans cover-like illustration is tremendous. Note how Raven’s cape dissolves into ink and surrounds her teammates. Now that’s what I call having someone’s back.

Finally, I really dug this close-up of Atom Eve. She may be wearing pink, but the glowing fingertips and the don’t-try-nothing-stupid facial expression are a far cry from frilly. Sugar and spice but not that nice. Rock on, Mr. Holbert.

  1. That Teen Titans “cover” is just gorgeous. Izzy’ll love you forever for that one. For someone who only ever saw 3 or 4 episodes of the show, it’s hard to believe what a fanatic she is.

    • You are now officially the coolest 2 women on the entire web. She loved the picture. Boy however was a bit more keen on the Wonder Woman collage from yesterday. I keep forgetting he’s in high school now and I’m not having an easy time with the whole teenager thing.
